Top 25 Teen Movies Of All Time

Writing late nite, well, not that late. But anyway, heres an idea for a post, something that will at least capture bitter’s imagination. Lets make a list of the top 25 teen movies of all time. I am gonna start with one, and then whoever posts next can just add a name. Then we can have a little discussion about whether the new additions get to stay on the list.

****
UPDATE: TEEN MOVIES ARE LIGHT FLUFFY FAIR THAT ARE FUN TO WATCH, NOT HEAVY DRAMATIC STUFF LIKE RIVER'S EDGE OR THE GREAT MOVIE FROM THIS PAST YEAR, BRICK (WHICH WOULD OTHERWISE BE CLOSE TO THE TOP OF THIS LIST).
****

1. Cant Hardly Wait – The best karaoke scene of all time – a totally great cast, including cameos, and J.L.H.
2. The Sure Thing - About what most high school guys dream about through high school.
3. Fast Times At Ridgemont High - Awesome, totally awesome. Nice move Hamilton.

4. Grease

5. Porkys
6. Heathers
7. Breakfast Club

8. 16 Candles

9. As keeper of the Blog, I am putting up another genre - Revenge of the Nerds.
10. Ferris Bueller's Day Off - Totally great kids movie.
11. Risky Businesss (come on, how could I have forgotten this, doesnt even need to be seconded)
12. House Party (with M. Lawrence stinkin up the big screen in his first role)
13. Dazed And Confused
14. Cant Buy Me Love - Standard formula teen movie, done oh so well.

It takes all of my strength to list just 1, casting Ferris Bueller's Day Off and The Breakfast Club aside, but I've got to say:

THE SURE THING

There are too many reasons...

Totally agree with Dawn . . . underrated but totally hysterical -- with a great scene with Tim Robbins as well . . .

But what qualifies as a "teen movie?" Does Stand By Me qualify? or does it have to involve teenagers doing typical teenage stuff?

If I have to choose one of the latter, then let's nominate "House Party 1" -- very very funny.

there are so many....

- Say Anything
- Mean Girls
- Clueless
- Fast times at Ridgemont high

are you really going to try to rank them all?! Good luck!

sixteen candles... yeah, that one too...

OK. So reposting with The Sure Thing, Fast Times for now.

OK. So reposting with The Sure Thing, Fast Times for now.

And Stand By Me is not a teen movie. A teen movie is a movie, um, focused on teens. Even if they were thirteen (and I think they were like eleven), it wouldnt really qualify.

But what about House Party?

Fast Times would be near the top of my list, and it would definitely also have to include Election and the Aussie flick Flirting

After periodically pondering this question all day, I have decided upon the following as my number one choice: The Last American Virgin. I was completely fascinated by this movie as a little girl...That, and Grease. :)

One more: Porky's. Classic. :)

Totally agreed that The Sure Thing, and Fast Times belong on this list, as well as Grease and Porky's. I also loved the Last American Virgin (was obsessed by it in fact), but in retrospect, I don't think it can be on this list.

My choices, other than those already stated:

Some Kind of Wonderful

Pretty in Pink (DUCKY!)

I'll second both Grease and Porkys. Do we have a second on any others - House Party, Sixteen Candles, etc.

Grumpy O. Selznick said...

So I guess we're not gonna reach consent on Last American Virgin. I kinda like that movie, but its so friggin depressing.

Jill said...

I'll second Some Kind of Wonderful, Pretty in Pink, Breakfast Club and Sixteen Candles. All awesome movies. :)

What about Heathers?

Jill said...

Oh and I second Say Anything and I propose Better off Dead. K, that's it, I'm done now. :)

Grumpy O. Selznick said...

Jill you're limited to two seconds, cuz you cant control yourself. Pick em.

But I will def second heathers.

Jill said...

All right. If I have to limit myself to 2 seconds, I'll go with Breakfast Club and Sixteen Candles. I own both of them and could watch them a thousand times over.

Can I propose Ferris Beullers? That's it! I swear. :)

Grumpy O. Selznick said...

ok im adding them

ab said...

Ferris!!! How could we forget Ferris?

And you have to go with Some Kind of Wonderful over Pretty in Pink if we need to choose.

Any movie with Mary Stuart Masterson playing the drums has got to be on the list!

Grumpy O. Selznick said...

Ok so Im adding Revenge of the Nerds which was a completely unique approach to a teen movie, and Im gonna throw anothe teen movie up in the comments see if anyone bites, Three Oclock High.

And I'll add Ferris.

Can't believe that YOU won't second House Party -- But I love Three O'Clock High and Heathers! So consider them seconded.

You ll have to add Donnie Darko, Brick, Dazed And Confused, Say Anything. Check out my top 5 lists at my movie blog www.finestfive.blogspot.com

AmyB said...

Ooooh, Dazed And Confused, for sure! And what about Animal House?

Grumpy O. Selznick said...

Usually Bitter- OK 3 Oclock High is seconded, heathers is already on the list.

Ment - Darko isnt really a teen movie, i dont know how to classify it, but it aint bubble gum. Neither is Brick, which I absolutely loved (and which i specifically mentioned as not a teen movie in the preamble to the post). Dazed and confused is hereby up for a seconding, and seconded by AMYD One of Linklater's best. Affleck actually good in this movie.

Amy - got D&C. I think Animal House isnt really teeny either. Great yes, but not a teen movie.

seems like we're running out of steam.

Jill said...

Teen Wolf; Can't Buy Me Love; Encino Man; Back to the Future (not sure if that qualifies but I'm exhausted and it seems logical right now).

Anonymous said...

I second Back To The Future (but only the original) and nominate:

CLUELESS

AMERICAN PIE (although I only watched half)

RUSHMORE (but I'm not sure that it's a true teen movie; I'm not sure anything with Bill Murray can really ever be a teen movie)

Anonymous said...

I second American Pie

Also would like to second Can't Buy Me Love

Jill said...

American Pie and Clueless...AWESOME.

One more: BRING IT ON!! Gotta love it. :)

Anonymous said...

Hell Yeah with Bring it On!

Ms. M said...

No one wants Mean Girls? I thought it was so clever!!

I agree with all that have been agreed upon... i love love love rushmore, but never considered it a teen movie, really... Bill Murray and the Teacher play bigger roles than most other teens. And Dirk was like, 10.

Same goes for Election-- love the movie, but it's too teacher-focused

How about horror movies? Nightmare on Elm St (the first)
Friday the 13th? Other scary camp movies!!

Revenge of the Nerds?? They were in university!!! OTherwise, I'd agree!!!

Dazed and Confused-- YES!!

Ms. M said...

oooh!! "Weird Science"!!!

and, I loved Better off Dead too, but would sooner put Cusack in "Say Anything" on the list first.

Anonymous said...

SAY ANYTHING isn't on the list yet??? I second it Ms. M. I looooove John Cusack.

Grumpy O. Selznick said...

Though about the horror film thing, but thats not really teeny - too many women dont watch that stuff. And Back to the Future, while a classic, is a pairing of a young actor and Chris Lloyd, so its def. not a teen movie.

Added Say Anthing, and (gulp) Weird Science. Holding on Clueless, Better Off Dead for now, but they are gathering steam.

And M. the nerds were freshmen, hence they were eighteen, with the emphasis on teen.

ab said...

Cluless should most definitely be on the list. I love Better off Dead ($2! I want my $2!!) as well, but I don't know if i'm allowed to second two movies in one post.

But I second them both.
